Neste gaat over tot uitvoeringsfase met partners in het MultiPLHY-project, met als doel de productie van groene waterstof te demonstreren bij de raffinaderij in Rotterdam

Neste gaat de uitvoeringsfase in met haar partners in het MultiPLHY-consortium. Het MultiPLHY-project beoogt de installatie, integratie en exploitatie van 's werelds eerste hoge-temperatuur electrolyzer-systeem op multi-megawattschaal (~2,4 MW) in Neste’s raffinaderij voor hernieuwbare producten in Rotterdam, om de productie van groene waterstof voor de processen van de raffinaderij te demonstreren. De technologie van de hoge-temperatuur elektrolyser wordt geleverd door Sunfire.

Het MultiPLHY-project is begin 2020 van start gegaan en sindsdien is het conceptuele ontwerp voltooid en wordt de laatste hand gelegd aan de gedetailleerde uitwerking. In de volgende fase gaat Neste starten met de bouwwerkzaamheden. Naast Neste en Sunfire zijn de partners van het MultiPLHY-consortium onder meer CEA, een Franse publieke onderzoeksorganisatie; Paul Wurth, een ingenieursbureau en technologieleverancier en ENGIE, een wereldwijde referentie op het gebied van koolstofarme energie en diensten.

"Als onderdeel van de groeistrategie van Neste blijven we ons richten op innovatie, waarbij hernieuwbare waterstof en Power-to-X twee van onze belangrijkste ontwikkelingsgebieden zijn. Het demonstreren van groene waterstof-productie bij onze raffinaderij in Rotterdam binnen het MultiPLHY-project, is een van de initiatieven waarmee we de ontwikkeling van nieuwe duurzame technologieën verder stimuleren", zegt Lars Peter Lindfors, Senior Vice President of Innovation bij Neste.

Het demonstreren van de technologie van de hoge-temperatuur elektrolyser is een belangrijke stap voorwaarts op het gebied van Power-to-X. In het kader van het project zal Sunfire de multi-megawatt elektrolyser leveren op basis van de innovatieve SOEC (solid oxide electrolysis cell) technologie, die werkt bij hoge temperaturen van 850 °C. Dankzij het gebruik van warmte heeft de hoge-temperatuur elektrolyser aanzienlijk minder elektriciteit nodig om één kilogram groene waterstof te produceren.

"We kijken uit naar de implementatie en ingebruikname van onze SOEC-electrolyzer. Samen met het sterke MultiPLHY-consortium gaan wij een innovatieve oplossing demonstreren over hoe de raffinage-industrie duurzamer kan worden", zegt de CEO van Sunfire Nils Aldag.

Het versnellen van concrete waterstof-projecten, zoals MultiPLHY, is de sleutel tot het identificeren van potentiële disruptors en het operationeel en commercieel levensvatbaar maken van de SOEC-technologie op schaal", zegt Michèle Azalbert, Managing Director bij ENGIE Green Hydrogen.

Het MultiPLHY-project heeft financiering ontvangen van de Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking in het kader van subsidieovereenkomst nr. 875123. Deze ‘Joint Undertaking’ krijgt steun van het Horizon 2020 onderzoeks- en innovatieprogramma van de Europese Unie, Hydrogen Europe en Hydrogen Europe research.
