In 2021, waste and residues accounted globally for more than 90% of Neste's global renewable raw material inputs. At Neste, we use a wide variety of sustainably-produced and globally-sourced raw materials to manufacture renewable products at our refineries in Finland, the Netherlands and Singapore. The proportions of individual raw materials in Neste's refining may vary from year to year, depending on their availability, price, and market-specific requirements.
Neste's proprietary NEXBTL technology enables the use of a wide variety of renewable fats and oils in the production of renewable products. Our renewable products are always of premium quality, regardless of the raw materials used in their production.

Innovative new raw materials
We are constantly looking into diversifying our portfolio with new raw materials.
We continue to work towards increasing the availability of renewable raw materials while also developing technologies to diversify our current raw material portfolio even further from what it is today. This will help us ensure access to sufficient volumes of raw materials to support our growing production capacity, which will enable us to maximize our positive climate handprint.
We are developing the availability of emerging, lower-quality waste and residue raw materials, such as acid oils, palm effluent sludge (PES) and wastewater-derived grease (i.e. “brown grease”), while continuing to study, for example, lignocellulosics, such as agricultural and forest harvesting residues, municipal solid waste and algae as future raw material options.
In the mid to longer term, we aim to continue diversifying our portfolio also with other types of raw materials, for example, novel vegetable oils (NVO) from advanced agricultural concepts. Neste also continues exploring Power-to-X technologies. We are taking steps to ensure the availability of raw materials, for example through acquisitions of companies specialized in the collection of waste and residues, partnerships, growing our global aggregation network, and through the development of our technical capabilities to process more challenging raw materials
