H.Essers: With Neste MY we are implementing our HVO insetting-solution for customers

H.Essers is a family business that has helped its customers to optimise their supply chains since its foundation in 1928. The company is now one of Europe’s leading transport and logistics providers for a variety of sectors, including chemical, pharma, components and infra. The focus lies on developing and implementing best-in-class sustainable solutions for transport, logistics and warehousing. “Sustainability is key to everything we do, it’s an integral part of our strategy”, explains Yannick Dylst, Sustainability Project Manager at H.Essers. It was in this context that the company introduced the HVO insetting-concept. By applying the mass balance principle, customer transports can be decarbonised by using the required volume of HVO in a different part of the H.Essers fleet.

Aspects considered by H.Essers

  1. Environmental impact: Emissions reduction is one of our tangible ambitions - Neste MY is a good match with these
  2. Immediate and without delay: HVO100 was a way of making an immediate difference for our customers
  3. Extra guarantee: Certification in line with the European Renewable Energy Directive II

What are the H.ESSERS sustainability goals?

“Sustainability is key to everything we do, it’s an integral part of our strategy. In our 2020-2025 sustainable strategy we commit ourselves to our five sustainable development goals, which we have translated into 19 tangible ambitions. CO2 reduction is one of these.”

When did you first consider using renewable diesel?

“At H.Essers we’re always looking for new ways of reducing emissions for our customers and we do this within the four pillars of our framework: improve, avoid, shift and inset. Alternative fuels and power technologies are an important element of the improve pillar. HVO100 renewable diesel is one of the alternatives here, so in 2020 we started exploring how we could use HVO100 for our customers.”

Were there any alternatives, such as electricity or biodiesel?

"We don’t rule out any alternatives but we were looking for a way of making an immediate difference for our customers. While HVO wasn’t yet publicly available in many places in Europe, that certainly wasn’t the case for e.g. electricity and hydrogen either. In the case of HVO we were able to solve this easily by applying our miles balance principle, as HVO can be used in our existing trucks and refuelling infrastructure without requiring any modification.

Why did you opt for Neste MY Renewable Diesel?

“After an extensive survey of the market, we decided to buy Neste MY Renewable Diesel via one of our regular suppliers that delivers in bulk to our own refuelling station. This is a perfect match with our HVO insetting-concept. Furthermore, we were looking for a sustainable fuel in the broadest sense of the word. The fact that it’s a 2nd generation biofuel based on waste streams and comes with external certification that this is in line with the European Renewable Energy Directive II provided us with the necessary guarantees in this respect too!”

How do you offer HVO to customers?

“We launched our HVO insetting-solution to overcome operational restrictions, such as the availability of HVO along the route, return journeys for other customers, or even LTL journeys. By applying the mass balance principle, we can decarbonise transports for interested customers by using the required volume of HVO in a different part of our fleet. We have offered this HVO insetting for slightly more than a year now. In total, our use of 270,000 litres of HVO100 has already led to a reduction of 772 tons of CO2e Well-to-Wheel. A wonderful result, and one which is greatly appreciated by our customers and other stakeholders as we can already make a difference for them right now.”

How do you envisage the future?

“Our roadmap to decarbonisation is technology-dependent. We continue to work on implementing a modal shift, but for journeys that are unavoidable we envisage an essential role for electricity and hydrogen in the long term. In the meantime, synthetic fuels and biofuels such as bio-LNG, and of course HVO, will continue to occupy an extremely important role.”
