Can you mix regular diesel and Neste MY?

Yes. Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel. This means that the fuel is a drop-in replacement for fossil diesel, no investment in replacing cars or modifying engines is necessary. The fuel can be blended in any ratio with fossil diesel – or used neat (100% concentration).

Is Neste MY of higher quality than other HVOs?

Neste MY is an HVO in its purest form (HVO100). Compared to other HVOs, Neste MY has the most extensive raw material portfolio, excellent production stability and very good cold properties. HVO's come in all kinds of mixed forms, HVO20 for example, consists of 20% HVO and 80% fossil diesel. With HVO100, of course, the sustainability benefits are the greatest. When HVO is mixed with diesel, the sustainability benefits are proportionally reduced. For example, HVO100 provides a CO2e reduction of up to 90%, with HVO20 this is a fifth, or 18%.

Are renewable diesel such as Neste MY and biodiesel the same kind of fuels?

No. Renewable diesel and biodiesel are two different fuels. Neste MY Renewable Diesel uses only renewable, organic raw materials and the suppliers meet strict sustainability criteria. The processing of the raw materials differs. Neste MY is an HVO: vegetable oil is purified and treated with hydrogen at a high temperature. This gives renewable diesel a similar chemical composition as fossil diesel. Biodiesel is based on fatty acid methyl ester: FAME. Its quality is less high and less constant. Biodiesel also differs in composition from both fossil and renewable diesel. Thanks to its chemical composition, Neste MY Renewable Diesel does not require any additional investment in the vehicle fleet or additional maintenance. Biodiesel does, however, require engine modifications and/or increase servicing.

How does Neste MY reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to electric driving?

Neste MY immediately delivers a GHG (CO2e) reduction of up to 90 percent compared to fossil diesel*. Neste MY can easily be refuelled in any diesel engine, in any ratio. No investment in replacing vehicles or modifying engines is required. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is available today and at scale. It provides an affordable and immediate way for customers to reduce emissions, without investing in new fleets or waiting for supporting infrastructure. It's a simple switch that can help future-proof fleets, preserving the investment already made.

Production

In which refineries is Neste MY Renewable Diesel produced?

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is produced at Neste's refineries in Porvoo, Singapore and Rotterdam.

All Neste refineries that produce renewable products have International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) or are approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, the refineries in Porvoo, Rotterdam and Singapore have ISO 14001 environmental certification.

How much renewable diesel does Neste produce annually and how much can it contribute to the reduction of emissions?

Neste is the world's largest producer of renewable diesel. Every year we produce almost three million tons of renewable diesel. Following the Singapore expansion expected to come onstream in Q1 2023, Neste will increase the total renewable product capacity from 3.2 to close to 4.5 million tons annually.

In 2020, Neste’s renewable products helped customers in several geographic markets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 million tons* altogether. This amount equals the annual carbon footprint of 1.5 million average EU citizens (source: World Bank) or the removal of 3.7 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year.

Raw materials and sustainability

How does Neste monitor the carbon footprint* of Neste MY Renewable Diesel?

The carbon footprint of all our products is calculated over their entire life cycle, from production by refining the raw material to end use.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than fossil diesel. Compared to fossil diesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.*

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions achieved through the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel depends on the raw material with which it is produced. The largest reduction in emissions is achieved through the use of waste and residues.

*The methodology for calculating life cycle emissions and emissions reduction complies with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive II (2018/2001/EU).

Biofuels

What are biofuels?

Biofuels are made from renewable raw materials, such as sugars, starches, vegetable oils, as well as various types of waste and residues from forestry, agriculture and food industry processes.
The greenhouse gas emissions over the entire life cycle of biofuels are generally significantly smaller than those of fossil fuels.

Are biofuels sustainable?

That depends on how biofuels are produced. Sustainable biofuels are made of raw materials that are sourced from sustainable sources  Their supply chain meets the strict sustainability criteria set for biofuels in many markets (e.g. EU Renewable Energy Directive II in Europe).
In Europe, fuel is only considered sustainable when the fuel producer uses renewable raw materials that come from traceable sources. The producer has to prove that the raw materials do not come from farms established by clearing natural forests or other land of high biodiversity value after 2008.

Can I refuel biofuel in a regular diesel vehicle?

That depends on the type of biofuel. Renewable diesel (HVO) is a drop-in fuel and can be used in all diesel engines without modifications. The fuel can be blended in any ratio with fossil diesel – or used neat (100% concentration).
Higher blends of biodiesel and ethanol require adapted engines. Check with your vehicle supplier what applies to your vehicles.

Why do biofuels not contribute to climate change similarly to fossil fuels?

Biofuels are produced from renewable raw materials. Their emissions consist primarily of carbon dioxide that the renewable raw materials, e.g. biomass, binds from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Fossil fuels are made from non-renewable resources and release carbon directly into the atmosphere. This is why biofuels have a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to fossil fuels. The carbon footprint of biodiesel and ethanol is 60 - 80% smaller compared to fossil fuels. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is able to create a footprint even up to 90% smaller.

LPG, what is it?

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Compared to gasoline, LPG can improve air quality impact. However, it is mostly produced from fossil sources limiting its positive impact on climate change. It is not possible to refuel LPG in a car intended for gasoline, as the products have different connection systems at the pump and users need specifically adapted vehicles.
