Destination fossil-free

Europe has set ambitious climate goals. What if we could get much closer to 2030 by 20.30 tonight? Neste MY Renewable Diesel can make a real difference by reducing greenhouse gases, today. After a century of reliance on fossil fuels for transport, we need to make new choices and addressing climate change requires urgent action. Ambitious future targets are vital but so are our actions today. Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ offers an immediate solution for reducing GHG emissions by up to 90%* over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel.

In 2020, Neste’s renewable products helped customers across the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 million tonnes1. This equals the annual carbon footprint of 1.5 million average EU citizens or taking 3.7 million passenger cars off the road for a year.

The European Union has set ambitious targets

30% reduction in GHG emissions for HGVs

Road transport is the backbone of the European economy, and by far the most important mode of freight transport. It is also a major source of emissions. The EU set a legally binding 30% reduction target for the average fleet emissions of new trucks by 2030.

55% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030

The European Union has set an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55%, compared to 1990 levels, by 2030. Achieving a 55% greenhouse gas emissions reduction will require action in all sectors of the economy and will put the EU on a balanced pathway to reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

Significant gap in meeting 2030 targets

Even using optimistic models, a fundamental shift to electric drivetrains and hydrogen will leave a substantial gap in meeting 2030 targets and beyond. According to the European Commission’s Impact Assessment2, the majority of heavy goods vehicles in 2030 will be diesel-powered. Neste MY Renewable Diesel can reduce GHG emissions of all diesel-powered vehicles by up to 90%* over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel. Right now.

Change takes time

The transport energy mix is changing and the sale of electric vehicles is accelerating fast. Electrically chargeable vehicles saw a surge in demand in 2020, accounting for 10.5% of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3.0%3 market share the year before. However, the majority of vehicles in 2030 will still be powered by internal combustion engines and diesel will still be widely used.4 Advanced biofuels such as Neste MY Renewable Diesel will be a key enabler of Europe’s climate ambitions.
