The European Union has set ambitious targets
Road transport is the backbone of the European economy, and by far the most important mode of freight transport. It is also a major source of emissions. The EU set a legally binding 30% reduction target for the average fleet emissions of new trucks by 2030.
Change takes time
The transport energy mix is changing and the sale of electric vehicles is accelerating fast. Electrically chargeable vehicles saw a surge in demand in 2020, accounting for 10.5% of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3.0%3 market share the year before. However, the majority of vehicles in 2030 will still be powered by internal combustion engines and diesel will still be widely used.4 Advanced biofuels such as Neste MY Renewable Diesel will be a key enabler of Europe’s climate ambitions.
