Road to sustainable transport
Europe has set ambitious climate goals. This requires urgent action and a willingness to choose more sustainable alternatives particularly in transportation that has relied on fossil fuels for too long. The European Union has set ambitious targets
Road transportation is the backbone of the European economy, and the most important mode of freight transport. It is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The EU has set a legally binding target of 30% reduction on average for the fleet emissions of new trucks by 2030.
The European Union has set an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2030 by at least 55% compared to the levels in 1990. Achieving a 55% reduction in GHG emissions reduction will require action in all sectors of the economy and puts the EU on a balanced pathway to reaching climate neutrality by 2050.
Significant gap in meeting 2030 targets
Even when using optimistic models, a fundamental shift to electric drivetrains and hydrogen will still leave a substantial gap when considering the 2030 emission reduction targets. According to the European Commission’s Impact Assessment, the majority of heavy goods vehicles in 2030 will be diesel-powered. Neste MY Renewable Diesel can reduce GHG emissions of all diesel-powered vehicles by up to 90% over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel (calculation method: European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive II (2018/2001/EU).
Change takes time
The transport energy mix is changing and the sale of electric vehicles grows fast. Year 2020 saw a surge in demand for electric vehicles, making up for 10.5% of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union, compared to a 3% market share the year before. However, the majority of vehicles in 2030 will continue to be powered by internal combustion engines, and diesel will still be widely used. Renewable fuels such as Neste MY Renewable Diesel are considered to be a key enabler for Europe’s climate ambitions.
